The November 2013 "Run For Vets" sponsored by Christa McAuliffe Middle School, Jackson, New Jersey once again proved to be a successful fund-raising event and canned food collection drive for the Veterans of the Vietnam War, Inc. & The Veterans Coalition's United Veteran Beacon House project assisting America's homeless military Veterans and Veterans who are in need of a hand up.
The annual school event to raise money for Veterans programs and bring US military Veterans into the classroom to visit with school children has continued for fourteen (14) consecutive years and is held in November each year around Veterans Day. Teacher Nancy Dellosso began a program concept 20 years ago to have the children of the Christa McAuliffe Middle School understand the importance of Veterans' sacrifices in serving their country during time of war and during peace time. In 2000, in observance of Veterans Day, the school's "Run For Vets" event was hatched.
As the NJEA website describes the school's "Run For Vets" program: "The event brings together students, staff, parents, Veterans, and community businesses to raise money for local Veteran causes. Run For Vets is the culmination of the "Honor our Vets" service learning project." Additionally the students and teachers collect and donate canned foods for The Veterans of the Vietnam War, Inc. & The Veterans Coalition's United Veterans Beacon House project.
Along with some of the school's teachers and students, Post NJ-03 members Marty Neff, Post NJ-03 Education Chairman and Rick Brody, NJ State Commander were interviewed by the NJ Education Association (NJEA) during filming of a video production which aired February 2014 on NJ Television channels throughout New Jersey. By developing mutually beneficial relations with the staff of Christa McAuliffe Middle School and nine (9) other Elementary and Middle schools in the Central NJ area, Post NJ-03 volunteers collected and delivered over two tons of canned foods to The Veterans of the Vietnam War, Inc. & The Veterans Coalition's VVnW Pittson, Pennsylvania Headquarters during 2013 to help fill United Veteran Beacon House food pantries.
